Broken Car
Road Atlanta August NASA Race.
Gary Jenkins, Rob Ebersol and I are 1,2 and 3 on track. We catch some lap traffic.
As Rob goes into 5, the lap traffic spins in the middle 5. Rob sees an opening to the right. The lap traffic had locked his wheels and was predictable. Seeing the lane open on the right, I follow Rob. Rob, watching the whole thing in his mirror, said he saw the wheels start spinning on the lap traffic mid spin (big no-no) The lap traffic starts to roll backwards toward me. Instead of t-boning his driver side at 70 or so, I went right, over the gravel. The car jumped 2-3 feet vertically in the air, landed on the pavement and bounced again another few feet into the air and onto the grass.
At the top of 5, along the right side in the grass, the right barely clips the tire wall swinging the front around. The front digs into the tire wall. Basically the car stops in less than a second. If the car hadn't jumped, then I would have slowed more, but brakes don't work very well in the air.
Here's some pics of the aftermath. The control arms all bent like they should so there was no damage to the sub-frame and just a little damage to the bumper horn.
